Travellers stranded in Spain with Flyglobespan collapse

Those who booked online will not see the cost of their flight refunded

Around 5,000 people are reported to be stranded abroad with the collapse of the largest Scottish airline, Fly Globespan, mostly in Spain, Portugal, Cyprus and Egypt.

The Civil Aviation Authority will be repatriating about 1,100 people who are protected under a Globespan package holiday, but a further 3,400 are abroad and not covered as they booked directly on the airline’s webpage. They will not get a refund on the cost of their flight, but the Department of Transport in the UK says they may qualify for a reduced rate repatriation fee. Both easyJet and Ryanair have offered special ‘rescue’ fares to get people home.

Several thousand more are set to miss out on their Christmas Holidays.
90,000 are thought to have booked flights with the airline over the period, many of them to Spanish destinations.

Only a few days ago the carrier dismissed talks of closure, but the collapse comes after the failure to secure a multi-million pound rescue package.
