The Chinese government and a variety of businesses from different sectors will be investing around 1 billion Euros for the development of a tourism, logistics and leisure centre in Murcia, Spain next year. The project is known as Special Zone of Chinese Investments and will include 2000 apartments, shopping and entertainment complexes, and educational facilities in addition to a theme park showcasing the Chinese cultural heritage.

The Secretary of State was in Alicante on Tuesday

The Secretary of State for Tourism, Joan Mesquida, speaking in Alicante on Tuesday, said he sees ‘no signs of recovery’ in the number of British tourists visiting Spain, which he described as half the foreign the number of foreign tourists which visit the Valencia region.
However there had been what he described as a ‘timid recovery’ in the number of German and French visitors.

Half a century after it pioneered the cheap “holiday-in-the-sun” package deal, Spain is seeking to upgrade its image by convincing the discerning and affluent tourist that it has much more to offer than just sun, sea and sangria.

Instead of overcrowded beaches in concrete jungles, tourist authorities want to put Spain’s lesser-known attractions, including its strong homegrown gastronomic traditions, firmly on the tourist map, targeting in particular the upper end of the market.

Beach sun beds in Spain are lacking foreign visitors this year, with the number of foreign tourists down 11.4% for the first six months of the year compared to last. The Government has said it expects there to be ten percent fewer tourists on the beaches, with a consequent reduction for business in bars, restaurants and shops along the costas.

Britain is one of the most expensive destinations in Europe for holidaymakers because of the high cost of day-to-day spending, a survey shows.

Those holidaying in the UK will have to fork out around £71 a day for such items as meals out, postcards, drinks, newspapers and ice cream, a survey by Teletext Holidays found.

The £71 figure is one of the highest in Europe and compares unfavourably with the best-value destinations Turkey (£61 for daily expenditure) and Spain (nearly £65).

Spain expects foreign tourist arrivals to drop by up to 10 percent this year due largely to the global economic downturn, Industry and Tourism Minister Miguel Sebastian said.

“Our forecast is that the end of the year will be better than the data that we are seeing now. While we will close with a decline in arrivals it will not be more than 10 percent,” he told reporters after meeting with sector leaders in the holiday island of Palma de Mallorca.

The Spanish Government has announced a 1 billion € plan to promote tourism, in what is the third extension of the Plan Renove tourism plan proposed by José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.

Under the name Plan Futur-E, 500 million € will be spent helping companies which promote sustainable energy and tourism, while the remaining 500 million will be given to projects financed by the ICO, Official Credit Institute. 100 million has been earmarked for the Canaries and announced already.

National tourism has covered for a fall in foreign visitors

Málaga has emerged as one of only a few destinations in Spain which has not seen a reduction in the number of tourists this summer.

The latest report from the Spanish Tourist Board, Exceltur, says the worst of the crisis for the industry is over.
Tourist numbers for the second quarter of the year were up over the same period last year only in Barcelona, Vitoria, Bilbao and Málaga, with national tourism key to the recovery.

Spain, the world’s second largest holiday destination, on Friday forecast a 10-percent fall in tourist arrivals this summer as the economic crisis hits its main source markets.

The government also announced that funding for a loan scheme announced in January to upgrade tourist infrastructure would be increased from EUR 400 million to one billion (USD 563 million to 1.4 billion) in a bid to “soften” the impact.

The government of Spain will EUR 1 billion to reform the country’s tourism infrastructure in 2009, more than double the amount originally planned, the industry and tourism ministry said Thursday.

In 2008, the government said it would provide EUR 400 million to hotels and other tourist sector establishments to help them modernise and face up to growing competition from cheaper sunshine destinations with newer establishments.
