Any not registered before 9th November will automatically be deactivated
There are just two weeks to go before lines for pay-as-you-go mobile phones will be automatically deactivated if their owners have previously failed to register their details with their operators.
The move comes under a new law which came into effect in November 2007 as a consequence of the Madrid train bomb attacks on 11th March 2004, when the bombs were set off by pre-paid mobile phones. Registration has been obligatory since the law came into force, but 20 million such phones bought before that date are estimated to still be in use.

The growth of the Internet and the emergence of a new computer-savvy generation leaves Europe well placed to capitalise on the digital economy, the European Commission said on Tuesday.
In its Digital Competitiveness report, the commission said 56 percent of Europeans had become regular Internet users by 2008, a jump of one third since 2004. Half of all households and more than 80 percent of businesses had a broadband connection.

The cap for a “roaming” text will fall to 11 euro cents (10p; 14 US cents), from about 29 cents on average today.
The EU-wide caps, excluding VAT, will take effect in July. They cover text messages and data roaming services, such as checking e-mails while abroad.
The current price cap of 46 euro cents per minute for an outgoing voice call will also fall to 43 cents in July.

A British man who set out to see how far he could travel relying only on the goodwill of people that use the social networking site, Twitter, has reached New Zealand
Paul Smith, 33, a journalist from Newcastle, is attempting to reach Campbell Island, a Unesco World Heritage Site off the coast of New Zealand, by Monday. He is using the trip to raise money for the organisation Charity: Water, which helps bring clean and safe drinking water to developing nations.

Spanish telecoms giant Telefonica Tuesday announced its plans to slash the bills of some of its customers who are unemployed in a bid to help combat the effects of the economic crisis.
“Our group, in its position as a leader … must give a sign and redirect its commercial offers to satisfy the new need to keep costs under control” of our customers, said the head of Spanish operations, Guillermo Ansaldo.

Social networking website Bebo on Monday announced the launch of five new European-language versions, its first major expansion outside the English-speaking world.
Owned by America Online, Bebo claims to have more than 22 million users worldwide, almost half of them in Britain.
Until now Bebo was available only in English and in Polish, compared to the 40 language versions offered by market leader Facebook.
From Monday users will also be able to choose French, German, Italian, Spanish and Dutch.

A new manufacturing method for lithium-ion batteries could lead to smaller, lighter batteries that can be charged in just seconds.
Batteries that discharge just as quickly would be useful for electric and hybrid cars, where a quick jolt of charge is needed for acceleration.
The approach only requires simple changes to the production process of a well-known material.
The new research is reported in the scientific journal Nature.

ITV has announced it is cutting 600 jobs across its businesses, and plans to make other “significant” savings.
The announcement came as ITV reported a loss of £2.7bn for 2008 after a huge write-down in the value of its assets.
About 500 of the jobs will be lost in Leeds with the closure of its Kirkstall Road studios, which makes programmes such as Heartbeat and The Royal.
