El País leads with Obama activating the anti-terrorist alert after the offensive being seen from Al Qaeda. The paper says that the threat from Yemen has changed the President’s agenda, while Europe continues to debate the use of full-body scanners at airports.
ABC says that José Blanco, the Development Minister, has ruled out their use in Spain without agreement in the EU, but notes too that the Government has not ruled out talking about the matter with the US at a meeting planned in Washington on Jan 13.
La Razón notes that the citizens from 14 countries now have to be body searched before they can fly to the United States.

More opinion polls to welcome the New Year
El País headlines that Zapatero is calling on a group of three ‘wise men’ to help with the six month presidency of the EU. The paper says he is looking for ideas for a economic government of the EU, and has called on Delors, González and Solbes.
ABC headlines today that Zapatero has doubled military spending abroad during his mandate. The paper notes that Zapatero has put the breaks on Miguel Ángel Moratinos, the Spanish Foreign Minister, and his attempts to soften the EU stance with Cuba.
La Razón headlines that unemployment has produced an extra cost of 21 billion to meet dole payments. The paper says the monthly cost has risen from 1.3 billion in August 2007 to 2.66 billion paid in October last year.

There is no common theme on the Sunday front pages today
El País leads with an advance of the considerations in the Constitutional Court over the new Catalan Statute. The paper headlines that the ruling will name Spain as the only nation, and says that the judges are trying to reach an agreement to avoid changing the pre-amble to the document where Cataluña is referred to as a nation.

The warning of a possible ETA attack leads the front pages today
The warning from the Interior Minister, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, that ETA are planning ‘a spectacular attack’, gets him on most of the front pages today.
El Mundo has a large photo and says the warning given was very concrete, with a kidnapping likely. The theory is that any such attack when Spain takes over the Presidency of the EU would obtain greater coverage.
El País headlines that ETA is planning to kidnap a ‘relevant person’. The paper says the Minister has said ETA wants to recover lost notoriety.
ABC also has a front page photo of Rubalcaba with his Basque counterpart.

The admission to hospital of the Aminatou Haidar leads most of the papers
El Mundo says the activist agreed to be admitted to hospital last night after vomiting blood. She has accepted treatment but is continuing with her hunger strike.
El País reveals that envoys sent by King Mohamed VI are in the United States negotiating a solution to the case. The paper says the envoys are the head of Moroccan espionage and a friend of the King.
ABC says that before her admission to hospital Zapatero had promised a quick solution to the crisis, and the PP has blamed the Spanish Government for the ‘kidnapping’ of her.
Público notes that the EU has ruled out placing economic sanctions on Morocco.

An unpopular new Bishop in San Sebastian features on many of the front pages in Spain today
El Mundo notes that the Socialist party in Spain has changed direction and is now supporting a referendum for the Western Sahara. Congress has also voted in favour of ‘top level mediation’ with Morocco over the case of Aminatou Haidar who remains on hunger strike at Lanzarote Airport. Meanwhile Morocco has threatened ‘serious problems’ if the EU creates difficulties.

El Mundo headlines that Zapatero is cornered by the weakness of his diplomacy.
The paper notes that the United Nations is demanding that Haidar return to her country, where her children are also living, but does not mention Morocco or the Sahara.
Also that Al Qaeda has announced that it will shortly send a letter with its conditions for the freedom of the three Spanish aid workers kidnapped in Mauritania.
And that the PP has accused the Interior Minister, Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, of being a traitor to the Guardia Civil for apologising to the Gibraltar First Minister, Peter Caruana.
