It will mean constructing a 7km tunnel through the mountains
It’s been confirmed by La Verdad newspaper that the Development Ministry has accepted the route supported by the Murcia Region for the high speed rail link between Murcia City and Cartagena. It’s the shortest of the routes proposed and also means that the line will be able to connect with the new international airport planned at Corvera.

Only 500 jobs are on offer
Almost 16,000 hopeful applicants have so far applied for the jobs on offer at two new El Corte Inglés establishments due to open at the commercial centre ‘El Tiro’ near Murcia University.
The CVs have been pouring in since the application period first opened three weeks ago for the 500 positions available at the new Hipercor and the El Corte Inglés store; the company has told La Opinión de Murcia that applications will be accepted until all the positions are filled, which they forecast will be at some time during December.

The busiest beach on Saturday was La Manga’s Playa del Galúa, where 9 people were pulled out of the sea
Saturday was a busy day for lifeguards watching over the beaches in Cartagena and Águilas, where 13 swimmers had to be rescued after they got into difficulties in reaching the shore.
Nine were pulled out of the water on Playa del Galúa, La Manga, Europa Press reports, and another person rescued on Playa de la Gola was taken to hospital as a precaution after swallowing water.

Temperatures over 40 degrees are forecast in some areas today
Seven provinces in Spain remain on alert for high temperatures today.
In Murcia temperatures over 40 degrees are expected as an Orange Alert is used by the Met. Agency, which says that highest temperatures will be in the NE of the region in Altiplano, Valle del Guadaletín, Lorca, Águilas and Vega del Segura between 1pm and 7pm where red alerts have now been issued. Yesterday at 5pm the temperature reached 44.6 in Murcia.

The airport is confident despite a recent slowdown in activity
The company which has the concession to run Murcia Airport, Aeropuerto de la Región de Murcia S.A. (AEROMUR), is reported to be negotiating a 160 million € loan with a group of banks so that development work can be completed.
80 million € has already been spent at the site, and Cajamurcia and CAM have granted a temporary credit while the main deal is found, and the company is confident that despite a recent slowdown in construction activity, the airport completion date will be maintained.

Police and Civil Guard are still looking for two prisoners from Murcia who escaped from the Castellón prison in the Valencia region between Saturday night and Sunday morning. They shared the same cell and managed to break out by forcing the bars on the window and reaching the street after climbing onto the prison roof.

The government of the Murcia Region is hoping to boost population by offering a baby bonus for the birth of a second child and for any other children born in later years. It’s part of a new law under preparation, which also plans benefits for multiple births and for children born with an illness. Help would also be available towards the cost of assisted reproduction.

There are now no hopes of finding the missing man alive
An intensive two-day search of the area off the Murcia coast where an immigrant boat sank this Tuesday has failed to find any sign of the passenger who has been missing since the boat went down. The authorities believe there is now no chance of finding him alive and have called off the search, La Verdad reports.

The regional president, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, proposed a pact on infrastructure, water and funding
The opposition Socialist Party in Murcia is reported to have agreed to sit down with the governing Partido Popular to negotiate a pact against the economic crisis affecting the Region. It will cover questions such as water, infrastructure and regional funding, and will be discussed at a meeting between Regional President, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, and PSOE’s spokesman, Pedro Saura.
