There are now just under four million unemployed in Spain

Unemployment in Spain rose by 794,640 over 2009 and now stands just short of four million at 3,923,602, a number 25.4% higher than a year ago.

The numbers come from the Ministry for Employment, and are the highest seen since 1996 when comparable counting systems were introduced.

The increase in the number of unemployed in 2009 was however slightly lower than that seen in 2008 when the number rose by 999,416, but last year is still the second largest increase seen.

The increase in the month of December was lower than that seen in November at 60,593, but job losses were seen in all sectors of the economy.

Over 2009 a total of 14,021,837 new contracts were issued, some 15.5% fewer than that seen in 2008. (Via Original Source)
