Spanish economy remains in recession

11 February 2010 4,110 views 4 Comments

Despite recent reports that Spain itself was feeling “bullish” about the recession, it seems that expats living in Spain would do well to not get their hopes up and to continue to expect the recession to continue well into 2010.

The Spanish economy is struggling to catch up with the European monetary union.

  • The Spanish economy shrank by 0.1% in the last three months of 2009, making it the last major economy still in recession.
  • Europe’s fifth-largest economy has the highest rate of unemployment in the eurozone.
  • INE, the national statistics agency, said the country’s gross domestic product had contracted by 3.1% compared with the same period a year before.
