Spanish Catholic Church wants abortion to be a crime
It comes as the Government is planning to reform abortion law
The President of the Spanish Episcopal Conference, CEE, Juan Antonio Martínez Camino, said on Friday that ‘taking the life of an innocent human is something that should never be morally accepted, and the laws have the obligation to protect this right. Abortion is a sin’, he said, and went on to say that he did not understand why it is not a crime.
The statement against abortion came during the presentation of another document from the Spanish Catholic Church entitled ‘In the face of the moral and economic crisis’, which outlines the Church’s position during the recession.
If follows earlier declarations from the church considering that those politicians who vote for abortion are sinners and should be denied communion.
Speaking for the Government, Deputy Prime Minister, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega responded by saying that Parliament has the last word on abortion law. She reminded the Church that its relationship with the Government is based on loyalty and transparency, and said that Parliament is working on an abortion law reform the aim of which is to give greater protection to those women who want to stop their pregnancy and also to health professionals.
