There is no common theme on the Sunday front pages today

El País leads with an advance of the considerations in the Constitutional Court over the new Catalan Statute. The paper headlines that the ruling will name Spain as the only nation, and says that the judges are trying to reach an agreement to avoid changing the pre-amble to the document where Cataluña is referred to as a nation.

El Mundo leads with a request from José Bono, the President of Congress, a role similar to that of the Speaker in the U.K.
He has called for changes in the electoral law to reduce the power of the political parties. He has proposed a mixed system which combines districts and national lists. He said that to be a deputy is should be easier to get on well with who votes for you, and not who selects you.

El País notes that the number of road deaths in Spain last year was down to a level last seen in 1964, at 1,897. The daily average has fallen over the past six years from 10.9 to 5.2.

El Mundo has the second part of its New Year opinion poll carried out by Sigma Dos. It highlights that Angela Merkel is the best valued European leader in Spain. She is seen as much more friendly, and with greater leadership skills than Nicolas Sarkozy or Gordon Brown.

ABC leads by highlighting the challenges faced by Zapatero this year, including unemployment, the sustainable economy law, social dialogue, a pact on education and another on energy, the Statute and elections in Cataluña, the Faisán ETA informant case and agreements with the smaller parties to obtain parliamentary stability.

El Mundo has a front page photo of a demonstration held in Bilbao by Etzerat, the ETA prisoners’ families’ organisation. They are calling for prisoners to be moved closer to the Basque Country and the paper notes the demo went ahead despite a judicial ban.
El País considers that the hard liners are losing the battle for power in the nationalist radicals.

El Mundo has an interview with the Danish cartoonist, Kurt Westergaard. He tells the paper that he is not going to abandon Denmark, his home or his cartoons, despite the axe attack from an Islamic radical over the weekend.
El País has a photo of the attacker being removed from the scene on a stretcher after he was shot by police. The paper also reports that Al Qaeda has established a new base in the north of Africa and in the Sahara.
La Razón says those who took the three Spanish aid workers in the area have distributed war videos on the internet. One of the messages posted speaks of blood, demolition and massacre.
ABC tells us that the United States wants to see new aviation security checks worldwide, which would mean having to arrive for your flight three hours before departure.

ABC has a front page photo of Carmen Cervera, the Baroness Thyssen. She tells the paper that she wants her children to inherit her paintings, but also to ensure that the works never leave Spain.

Público has 30 forecasts for 2010 made by experts who have answered what the paper considers to be the questions of the year. One of the questions is ‘Will Spain exit the recession?’

La Razón shows a group of people handing out leaflets ‘explaining alternatives’ to women outside abortion clinics. The paper describes them as ‘Rescuers of life’.
El Mundo reports that police are searching the Lidl supermarkets in Madrid after 25 kilos of heroin was found in the boxes of bananas on sale in several of the supermarkets.

El Mundo prints its list of the 500 most powerful for 2010 and notes the rise of the union leaders Cándido Méndez, Toxo and the Minister for the Economy, Elena Salgado. Florentino Pérez, back as Chairman of Real Madrid is back in the Top Ten.
Real could go top of the league today after Barcelona were held to a 1-1 draw at home against Villarreal last night.

And finally,
