More opinion polls to welcome the New Year
El País headlines that Zapatero is calling on a group of three ‘wise men’ to help with the six month presidency of the EU. The paper says he is looking for ideas for a economic government of the EU, and has called on Delors, González and Solbes.
ABC headlines today that Zapatero has doubled military spending abroad during his mandate. The paper notes that Zapatero has put the breaks on Miguel Ángel Moratinos, the Spanish Foreign Minister, and his attempts to soften the EU stance with Cuba.
La Razón headlines that unemployment has produced an extra cost of 21 billion to meet dole payments. The paper says the monthly cost has risen from 1.3 billion in August 2007 to 2.66 billion paid in October last year.
El Mundo has day 3 of the opinion poll carried out for the paper by Sigma Dos, and headlines that only 13% think that Zapatero has responded well to the crisis. 52% consider that his response has been bad or very bad. The poll shows that the Spanish think that the economy will get worse in 2010, although they will do better.
ABC has its own survey which shows that 85% of Spanish directors think that the economic situation is bad or very bad.
Público has its own regular poll and notes a slight recovery in the marks given to the Government.
La Razón reports that Europe has alerted over the lack of hospital beds and nurses in the Spanish health system.
El Mundo declares today that the Spanish Bishops Conference has rejected the arguments of the President of Congress José Bono, and considers there are motives to deny him communion. Bono told the paper earlier that his conscience was clear as a Christian for voting for the reform of the Abortion Law.
La Razón notes the inequality of the sexes in the Spanish judiciary system where women make up just 15% of the top jobs.
Público puts domestic violence on its front page today and notes the first women to die this year was killed by her partner in Sevilla yesterday. 55 women died in 2009, and the Government is now promoting a Europe-wide Euro-order against the abusers.
The papers give more coverage to the heroin bananas found on sale in Lidl in Madrid, with El Mundo reporting that they were headed for Pontevedra. Yesterday’s reports said the drugs were heroin, but today El Mundo says it was cocaine.
El Mundo notes that both the United States and the UK have closed their embassies in Yemen because of fears of an Al Qaeda attack.
El País reports that the U.S. is preparing to fight Al Qaeda in Yemen while La Razón has a photo of a woman in a whole body scanner. La Razón says the UK is to install body scanners in its airports despite the devices being prohibited in the EU.
El País says that the International Monetary Fund has predicted emerging countries will grow three times faster than rich countries between now and 2014.
El Mundo has an interview with Joan Laporta, Chairman of Barcelona. He has been campaigning ever more actively for Catalan independence, and tells the paper that he does not know if the region wants a leader or a martyr. He says he can’t be a martyr, but he can be a leader.
El País reports on the Government’s anti-piracy plan and says that webs which link to illegal downloads could be closed by judicial order in a month. The paper has a two page report.
El Mundo has a front page photo of Mariano Rajoy, the PP leader, who was in Santiago with his wife yesterday to welcome the celebrations for the year Xacobeo. He invited everyone to visit. ABC also has a front page photo.
Staying in Galicia, El País tells us that the rise in temperatures along the coast there is threatening the local shellfish industry. There were highs of 26 degrees in the water last year, compared to 24 degrees in 2008 and just 20 degrees in previous years.
Somewhere else you could go is the tallest building in the world. El País has a photo of the tower Burj Dubai which is officially opened today. It rises 818 metres above the desert and can be seen from 95 kilometres away. It has 160 floors and 57 lifts.
And finally,
El Mundo has a photo of Warren Beatty on its masthead today. It seems that Tiger Woods may have a rival as Beatty claims to have slept with 12,755 women. (Via Original Source)

Articles like this are always interesting in hindsight. Do you think the Spanish economy has gotten better? And who cares about Tiger Woods?
john
Interesting. It will be a while until until they get it all figured out, if ever.
I like this article. Most of the countries today are experiencing such phenomenon – Economic problems.
It seems that no countries are immune to increased crime as the economic conditions continue to get worse. We are seeing more and more of this in the US as well.
