No whole body scanners at Spanish airports, for now
Spain will only introduce such scanners when there is EU agreement
Spain has dismissed the idea of using whole body scanners at Spanish airports, at least until there is an EU-wide agreement on the matter.
The Detroit attack over Christmas has brought airline security back into the spotlight, and the U.K. is among the countries to say that it will be introducing the new scanners.
Development Minister, José Blanco, said on Monday that the Spanish Government would not be taking additional measures in airport security until the EU was in agreement, but it would follow the request made by the United States to tighten controls on flights heading there.
Blanco said the cabinet was debating how to make the freedom and privacy of passengers compatible with security, and he called for a period of reflection on the use of such body scanners.
Asked for more information on the reported terrorist threat from Basque terrorists ETA, Blanco said he was unaware of ‘any singular threat’, but that ETA had always done as much damage as it could. ‘We can never lower our guard’, he said. (Via Original Source)
