British Airways strike: Virgin and easyJet to schedule extra services

Virgin Atlantic has taken the decision to put larger aircraft on key routes such as New York, Boston, Washington and Delhi, providing over 1,600 extra seats during the period of industrial action.

The extra seats will go on sale over the next 24 hours.

“It is a nightmare for passengers, and you have to feel for them at Christmas time. Any strike would obviously be extremely damaging to everybody – the company, employees and most importantly the travelling public.” said Sir Richard Branson, president of Virgin Atlantic.

easyJet has 160,000 seats still available on routes where it competes directly with BA, but said today that it may add more services after a rise in bookings following the strike announcement.

The low-cost carrier has also said that anyone who holds a British Airways Gold and platinum executive card will also be granted free priority boarding on its flights.

Flybe is to add six flights from London to Jersey between December 24 and January 2, while Dominic Paul, managing director of Bmi, pledged that the airline “will do all it can” to assist passengers affected by the dispute.

“The timing of the dispute over the seasonal period has been intended to cause maximum upset, inconvenience and frustration to passengers during this time,” he added.
Virgin Trains has said it is looking at the prospect of introducing extra services between London and Glasgow during the strike. (Via Telegraph)
