Alicante headmaster faces suspension for protest over citizenship classes in English
His offence was a photo of the regional education councillor displayed with the words ‘Unwelcome Person’
The headmaster of a secondary school in Monforte del Cid faces a 20-day suspension without pay over a photograph of the regional government’s councillor for education, Alejandro Font de Mora, which was put up in the school lobby in November last year. The photo was placed on the wall upside down, with the words below it, in English, ‘Unwelcome Person’.
It came as a protest agreed by all the teachers at Las Norias secondary school against the regional government’s plans for citizenship classes to be taught in the region only in English, an education policy which was widely opposed across the region.
Protests against the Generalitat’s education policy have continued this year and it was this Monday, the day before more protests were held in Valencia, Alicante and Castellón demanding Font de la Mora’s resignation, that the headmaster was notified of the education department’s decision. José Luis Santiago told Diario Información that he’s also been told that the department have warned that they may take further disciplinary measures to revoke his appointment as headmaster of Las Norias.
He plans to take up his right to appeal the measures which he describes as ‘a violation of the freedom of expression which should prevail in a democratic country such as ours’. (Via Original Article)
