Air traffic delays on flights in Spain

Delays have been seen on flights to the Canaries, and Madrid is expected to be next

The Air Traffic Controllers Union, USCA, which makes up 95% of the 2,400 controllers who work in Spanish airspace, have said that the cause of delays seen on flights to the Canaries is a result of the ‘insufficient number of controllers programmed to work by AENA, the Spanish Airports Authority’.

The controllers have denied that they have been working to rule, but say they expect similar delays over forthcoming days in other parts of the country, including Madrid.

The controllers claim that there are 20-30% fewer controllers working on the Canaries than at this time last year, while the number of flights is the same.

Meanwhile José Blanco, the Minister for Development, has attacked the strike plans of Spanish air traffic controllers who he described as ‘privileged’. The minister claimed that they are already paid more than double the EU average. (Via Original Source)
